Letter of the Secretary to Arnab is contempt of Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has issued a show-cause notice to the Secretary of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in the matter of writing a letter to Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of the Republic Media Network. The court has asked them in two weeks to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them?

The Assembly Secretary had allegedly told Arnab not to inform the apex court about the House notice. The Supreme Court has granted relief to Arnab from arrest in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for breach of privilege.

The court strongly objected to the October 13 letter of the Assembly Secretary and said that at first sight, they had contempt of court. Arnab's lawyer Harish Salve read the excerpt from the letter to the bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. The bench said, "We are surprised that the officer has written such a letter in which he has said that the proceedings of the assembly were confidential."

It cannot be told the court said that this is a serious matter and is akin to contempt. Such a statement is unpredictable and is intended to insult judicial administration. Apart from this, it is a direct intervention in the field of judicial administration.
