2020 has been the eighth warmest year in 119 years. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the average temperature in 2020 is recorded to be 0.29 degrees above normal.
However, despite this, it has been less than the highest in the year 2016 so far. Normal temperatures have been estimated based on 1981–2010 estimates. IMD said this about India's climate during 2020 on Monday. Temperature data in the country are available since 1901.
Based on this data, 2020 is the eighth warmest year ever. However, it was somewhat less than the hottest the year 2016 so far. The average land surface temperature in 2016 was recorded to be 0.71 higher than normal.
According to IMD, out of 15 hot years since 1901, 12 have been recorded only during the last fifteen years i.e. from 2006 to 2020. Not only this, 2011-2020 has been hotter even if it comes to a decade.
