The Department of Industry and Internal Trade Promotion (DPIIT) has stated in the draft e-commerce policy that e-commerce platforms cannot discriminate among their vendors. It also states that the government will decide the principles of data usage for the development of an industry.
Also, adequate measures will be taken to prevent unauthorized person access to data and misuse. Drafts in an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by a top official of DPIIT were discussed. According to the draft policy, the government is in the process of formulating regulations on private and non-private data. Data sharing will be encouraged for industrial development.
According to the draft, the government will decide the principles of use of data for e-commerce, consumer protection, national security, and economic security. The government believes that data is a very important asset. Indian units will have the first right to use data from India. The meeting stated that e-commerce operators must ensure that their use is not biased.
