The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the Bombay High Court's decision to cancel the caste certificate of Navneet Kaur Rana, Lok Sabha member from Amravati. Rana is an independent MP from the reserved parliamentary seat of Amravati in Maharashtra. Considering Rana's appeal, a vacation bench of Justices Vineet Sharan and Dinesh Maheshwari issued notices to the Maharashtra government and the person who complained against the caste certificate, among others.
The high court had on June 9 canceled Rana's caste certificate, saying he had obtained it fraudulently on the basis of forged documents. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Rana. The Amravati seat from which Rana won the Lok Sabha elections is reserved for the Scheduled Castes. The Supreme Court said, we will hear the matter on July 27. Till then we are staying the order of the High Court.
