Kathmandu Airport Reopens After 24-Hour Shutdown Following Gen Z Protests

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport resumed operations Wednesday, about 24 hours after authorities closed it amid widespread protests and civil unrest. The decision to reopen came after a meeting of the airport’s Security Committee, as the Nepal Army imposed nationwide restrictions in an effort to restore order.

Why Was the Airport Shut Down?

The airport was shut in the afternoon as violent protests, led largely by Nepal’s younger generation, ramped up in response to government actions that many viewed as suppressing free expression and worsening corruption. Demonstrators clashed with security forces, set fires, and carried out acts of vandalism. The closure was part of a broader security crackdown as authorities deployed heavily across the capital.

What Happened After the Shutdown

While the airport was closed, all flights—domestic and international—were suspended. Air India, IndiGo, and other airlines canceled their services to and from Kathmandu, leaving a number of travellers stranded. Passengers were urged to stay put and seek updates as the situation developed and flight schedules were disrupted.

Simultaneously, the government and security forces arrested dozens of individuals involved in looting, arson, and other violent acts. Fire trucks were brought in to handle blazes. A curfew was enforced in many parts of Kathmandu, and temporary deployment of army units aimed at bringing law and order.

Reopening & What It Means

With the airport’s reopening, airline operations have begun to pick up again. The Civil Aviation Authority has advised travelers to check with their carriers for the latest flight information, and to carry proof of identification and their tickets. Scheduled flights will resume, and some airlines are arranging special services to bring back stranded passengers.

Despite the reopening, restrictions remain in place. Nationwide curfew orders and security measures continue as authorities seek to stabilize the situation. The protests—rooted in young people’s anger over political corruption, social media restrictions, and economic challenges—have shaken the country. The airport’s return to operation marks one step toward normalcy, but the political atmosphere remains tense and uncertain.
