Guwahati, Sept 14 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹18,530 crore in Assam, marking the beginning of his three-day tour that will cover Mizoram, Manipur, West Bengal, and Bihar.
In Darrang, the Prime Minister unveiled a series of health and infrastructure projects, including a new Medical College and Hospital, a General Nursing and Midwifery School, and a BSc Nursing College. He also laid the foundation stone for the Guwahati Ring Road and the Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra, aimed at easing regional connectivity.
Later in the day, Modi reached Golaghat, where he inaugurated Assam Bio-Ethanol Private Limited’s unit at the Numaligarh Refinery. He also laid the foundation stone for a Polypropylene Plant at the same refinery, projects expected to boost clean energy initiatives, strengthen the petrochemical sector, and generate new jobs.
The Prime Minister’s visit coincides with the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika. In Guwahati, Modi is scheduled to release a commemorative coin and stamp, while 1,200 artists will participate in a musical tribute to the late singer-composer.
The Assam leg is part of a larger itinerary covering multiple states. On Sunday, Modi will travel to Aizawl in Mizoram to inaugurate the ₹8,070-crore Bairabi–Sairang New Railway Line, the state’s first major railway project. He will also flag off three new trains linking Mizoram with Delhi, Guwahati, and Kolkata.
In Manipur, projects worth over ₹7,300 crore will be launched, including highways, urban roads, a women’s hostel, and the new Civil Secretariat in Imphal. The Prime Minister is expected to highlight these initiatives as steps to improve infrastructure and governance in the northeast.
On the second leg of the tour, Modi will address the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference in Kolkata. His final stop will be in Bihar, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth around ₹36,000 crore, including the new Purnea Airport terminal and the National Makhana Board.
The multi-state tour, officials said, underscores the government’s focus on boosting connectivity, healthcare, energy, and cultural heritage across eastern and northeastern India.
